A Big Point and a Little Point

Here is the big point:

I love my state. Thank you for doing the right thing.

Here is the little point:

A big head slap to the parents who named their daughter Caragh, instead of the more obvious “Kara” or even “Cara”. The way it is spelled now makes me want to close with a gutturalaaaaggggghhhhh“.

Comments

  1. Maybe it’s pronounced ka-ruff’??

    Yes, good on Massachusetts.

  2. Yay for your state, indeed. I’m in Canada and it is legal for gays to marry in all provinces. Sadly, I live in one of the more conservative provinces and they actually talked about blocking the legislation here. Luckily, they had no legal grounds to do this and people’s rights were maintained.

Reminds me of a girl named Leigh I knew in college. what is wrong with just plain Lee? I just don’t get it!

  4. Another reason to move to Mass!

  5. Good to know Mass is joining the ranks of great places to live – following Canada’a lead 😛

  6. If parents these days had their way, your state would be spelled Massachoosyttes.

Dontcha know that giving your child a unique name OR a normal name with a unique spelling ensures they are blessed with uniqueness? And not the kind of uniqueness that leads to teasing and social ostracization, but the uniqueness that makes the world a better place and makes her famous. A girl named Cara or Kara will grow up to be pedantic and bland. But Caragh will be sassy and special and her sassy specialness will rub off on mommy and daddy, those clever folk who named her thusly.

    Where have you BEEN?

…and yeah for Massachusetts! You rock.

I’ve always been grateful to be named Jane.

    Plain Jane.

When people ask my name, I’ve never had to say, “Oh, that’s ‘Jayne’ spelled with a ‘y'” or “My parents really wanted to f— me up, so they spelled it J-a-i-n.”

Point being – I agree with you!

Anyway… We’ve just signed on to NE Mamas as contributors and wanted to say hi to a fellow bloggah!

I have a friend named Caragh, but she lives in Dublin, where, apparently, that’s how you spell it.

But yeah, I do agree on the weird name spellings – I know someone who named her two girls Klaudia and Kennadee. Ouch.

You know, if they were following an Irish spelling, that is ok with me! It’s when phonetics go crazy that I do too.

Funny you mentioned Klaudia b/c I have a friend with a Klaudia—-it is spelled with a “K” b/c that is traditional in Hungary, the country of her husband.

The Kennadee travesty is something else, though, I think.

Thanks for being one of those who make a difference.
