The 10,000 Step Program

All I wanted for Christmas was a pedometer. . . yes, a little doo-dad that clips to my waistband and records all the steps I’ve walked in a day.

I’m not normally a gadget-y type of person, but, I thought it’d be interesting to see how close I get to the 10,000 “recommended steps” a day.

I am failing miserably:

Day One: 3,602
Day Two: 3,755
Day Three: 1,011
Day Four (today): 2,189 (so far)

OK, first: what the hell happened on Day Three? Second, did you do the math and see that it takes me four days to get to my “10,000 recommended steps a day”?

I thought that a pedometer would be validating—it would show me that all those flights of stairs I climb every day, all that running after the kids, all the cleaning, cooking, laundry, errand running. . .all these things were adding up to a healthier me. Instead, I see that I am a long way from my goal.

So, if you see me, and I’m pacing back and forth like a stressed-out tiger, please understand that I’m just racking up the miles. . .er, steps.

  3. Wow, sounds like you need to ge tout more and walk.

    I tried that a few times but also failed miserably. I’ll have to see if I can find my pedometer.

    If it is too cold to walk outside, try a Leslie Sansone indoor walking DVD. I bet you’d up your step total then! 🙂

    Wow, and you are a very active mommy too.
    I go to the gym now 5 days per week. I am pretty sure that 3-5 miles on the treadmill keeps me covered for the 10,000 steps….

  6. Oh, that’s funny… I had a general doctor’s appointment the other day and the doctor asked me if I exercise regularly. I told him “I chase kids around all day so that must count for something”. Maybe not after reading your blog.

    I tried one of those things a few years ago, and was so horrified by the results, I got rid of it. I never even got close to 10,000 steps a day…

  8. The boy got one of those in school last year…even with gym class and hockey practice he only made eight thousand a day, so, um, good luck.

  9. I was did that once. I was disappointed too. Military Man always beats me times 10. He walks to work everyday Mr Green and Lean…and no gray hair, and no cavities, and perfect eyesight…phheffttt he is so annoying.

  10. Ugh! I thought for sure we would be well on our way to the 10,000 steps with everything we do. Great! Now maybe I should exercise – or not!

    I almost bought on before we went for Disney because I heard that the average person walks ten miles a day there. I kind of wish I had done it just to see. Think about how many more steps you’re taking though than the average person.

  13. Hey girlfriend! I tried to get to 10,000 steps every day a few years ago. The only way I was able to do it was with semi-obsessive exercise. In other words, I went to the gym 4 days a week and ran and walked for about an hour and a half. I also had to keep the pedometer on all day while I did regular daily tasks of chasing around a three year old and a four year old in order to get close to this number. In the end it wasn’t very pleasant. I’ve decided the only way I’d be “happy” with my body and the amount of exercise I do is to actually become an athlete. With all of my other ambitions at this point, it’s not looking good. I advise you to become an athlete—that should cover the 10,000 steps. LOL
