Sticks and Stones

He wasn’t even riding his scooter at the time. He must have just fallen sideways and landed, with a hard thud, on his elbow.

There were tears, but mostly it was his arm that hung limp by his side that scared me. I carried him indoors and tried to distract him with cartoons, grapes, jokes—wanting to see if his arm would come back to life.

Instead, he and I went to the ER. Four hours of my little guy in my lap, head on my chest, little arm hanging by his side. He was so quiet and stoic until the x-rays, when he screamed as his arm was straightened, was twisted, for the best picture. The technician looked like she might cry.

Nothing definitive. We see an orthopedic surgeon tomorrow to determine what the plan should be. Right now, he sleeps, exhausted from his ordeal.

And, I type, as I wait for the fatigue in my body to overcome my brain and let me rest.

Oh. Poorly Fairly Odd Son. A broken arm. And he’s so little.

  2. Oh no! Poor little guy.

  3. Oh, the poor kid. I broke my arm recently and having the xrays taken was the WORST. Hugs to you both.

  4. Poor little guy :(. I hope it turns out to be something easily healable (and that if he needs a cast he gets a really cool color, and better yet make it waterproof too).

You’ll be wiped out today yourself. All that stress does a number on us parents…

  6. I can feel his pain…literally. I dislocated me knee a little over two years ago…OUCH!

    I am thinking of him.

  7. Oh, poor boy. Sending you my best thoughts for a fast and complete recovery.

  8. Ouch. Give him a hug from us and I hope he’s on the mend soon!

  9. Oh no! It is so hard to see them hurting. How is he doing now?

Oh no! I hope its nothing too serious! Let me know if you need anything!

  11. Ugh, so awful when that happens.

Emily broke her collarbone in the middle of the night, just falling out of her (twin-sized, small) bed onto her (carpeted) floor. She was 4 at the time. It was just as you say – the quiet and the not-moving made me a lot more nervous than the tears.

I hope he heals quickly – and you, too.

Poor kiddo!!! When I was eight I fell while riding my bike–caught myself on my elbow and broke it. My dad heard the whole thing, ran up, and started moving my arm all around to gauge the damage: “Does this hurt? How about now? Oh, it’s not so bad!”

I had to have a special cast because it swelled so badly. They even had to cut my favorite shirt off of me because it wouldn’t fit around the elbow: an ugly pink thing with a zebra on it.

    Ah, memories.

  13. Oh, no no no.
And oddly enough, we thought we would have to take The Baby to emergency for the SAME THING this afternoon. She’s okay and I hope your little guy is, too.

  14. Poor kid! (Poor mom!)

I hope he feels better today.

So sorry to hear about Dante! Poor little man. 🙁 I hope all heals quickly.
