Twitter has got my back

I’ve tried to explain Twitter to people by painting a picture of me sitting in front of the television watching bad reality shows and having others “out there” keeping me company in the quiet of the night.

I’ve talked about how Twitter is great for breaking news. It’s where I first learned of Michael Jackson, Patrick Swayze and Walter Cronkite’s deaths. I’ve read of a far-away earthquake or the near-collision of local trains minutes after they’ve occurred.

I’ve seen mothers post frightened notes about their sick children, asking for the support and prayers of friends and strangers alike. I’ve been heartened when their kids bounce back, and I’ve cried when they haven’t.

So, yes, I think Twitter is more than just some dumb place for people to tell everyone what they ate for lunch or to promote their website.

Tonight, I came home from my daughter’s soccer practice feeling sad and unlikable. I had just spent an hour watching her team run back and forth across the field while my other two kids climbed on the playground behind me. But, what I tweeted was something that had affected me most:

I was blown away by the responses:

And there were more:

It’s like a group of people just came over and gave me a collective hug when I needed it most. Thanks, guys. You all rock.

Next practice though? I’m bringing my ipod.

Yes. Totally. When people (like, my family, a million times over) ask me about Twitter I should just direct them to this post.

What bothers me about the nasty mom behavior is that it typically is the nasty moms' issues — they're insecure about something and taking it out on others. It sucks for what it is…and also because undoubtedly they're passing that exclusionary coping mechanism right down to their kids.

You are the best. Never doubt it in the face of such absurdity. -Christine

  3. I think that's why my child doesn't play soccer.

My blog is kind of like twitter, too. They make me feel less alone.

  5. Oh my goodness…I started my entire honestbaby.com blog because of mommies like them. LOL

Unfortunately, I dropped out of the MOMS Club (where they ruled) and we only attend Story Time, so I ran out of blogging fodder–HA HA.

Don't let 'em get ya down…I think you already know that, though, don't ya? 🙂

  7. Yeah, I seem to run into that a lot in my oh so chic town. And I thought it was just me.

It sucks that women do that to each other.

Soccer practice…. highschool bs all over again.

    (HUGS) You're cool. don't worry.

I STILL don't understand Twitter. I'm on it and clueless. "Twilliterate", if you will.

Unlikeable? You? 😛 to those moms and their little dogs too!

The exact same thing happened to me just this morning after I dropped my son off at preschool. The "In-crowd- moms" were all grouped together talking and they actually purposely avoided eye-contact with me when I approached them to say hello. I mean really nice. What is it with some women?

  15. I'm often in the outside looking in situation at my kids' events. Apparently I'm far from alone…maybe we should all get together and form our own club..lol!

  21. That stinks. I think people sometimes think because we homeschool that we're not normal people.

  23. Grrrr. Mama bear mad.

    Sigh.

I've been there, too, and it sounds from the tweets, so have many other spectacular moms. But that doesn't make it suck any less. Remember that there is a universe of people who know how awesome you are. (And it's one that doesn't include nasty alpha moms because they can't type on their iphones with their fake nails anyway.) Suck it, beyotches.

I always wonder though, if there is a post on some blog somewhere about that mother who never wants to join in on the conversation… You know? I mean, I don't know what happened at practice, but I know that sometimes a group already knows each other and just naturally hangs out. If I don't go over and introduce myself and MAKE them talk to me, then they may assume that I have no interest.

Just trying to sport every side of a situation. I hope no one was outwardly mean to you. That's just childish and, well, MEAN.

  27. I remember those days. I hated those women, and their little dogs, too. (Okay, their little kids. Yes, I held their mothers' suckiness against the "innocent" kids.)

I say a hearty and loud, "Amen!" to Twitter and letting us take our community with us wherever we go.

Sorry I missed it, but you know I was good for a supportive comment! I most definitely feel that way during my once-a-week preschool dropoff with Baby.
