Television? Oh, my kids never watch. . .(cough)

Mommy, can I play Lego Batman?”, my little wii-obsessed five-year-old son asked me sweetly.

I glanced at the clock and relented, “OK, but only for 20 minutes because we have to leave for your sister’s dance class.

“How long is that?”

“Um, twenty minutes?? Well, it. . . is. . .um, it’s a little while. . .”

“Is it one SpongeBobs or two SpongeBobs?”

Oh. My. Goodness. He is telling time, not by counting minutes, but by measuring them against the length of an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants.

I can’t decide if this is brilliant or pathetic.

  1. Brilliant or pathetic, I think its normal, my 24yo brother did that when he was a kid.

HAhahahaha! I think it's brilliant. And now you can use this to explain all concepts of time for him!

How long is an hour? Two Sponge Bobs and a bit

When is tomorrow? In about 32 Sponge Bobs.

When will Daddy be home? 4 Sponge Bobs

Totally cracks me up. Maybe I'll use this (only with Dora) to explain time to my 3 y/o who's constantly confused.

  5. When my sister's kids ask, "How long until we're there," she (cleverly) tells them…in Sponge Bob increments.

Um, I am pretty sure that's how mine do it too. Even now, when M can tell time. Ha.

I think I may have learned that way too. It makes sense in kid world.

Dude, TV rocks. The end. lol

  17. I have to agree with eveyone else! My daughter, age 4, knows when she gets out of the tub she knows she has 1 hour until bed, so I tell her 2 Little Bears! I think it is a great way for them to be able to tell how long something is, who cares if it is a TV show! They don't have a good concept of time at this age and this is a perfect way to teach them!

  19. Hey, people have been teaching math using football scores for years. It's not pathetic, just hip. 🙂

I have the best readers EVER! You guys are making me feel ok about this!

And, I didn't even mention that my 8yo, Belly, has learned the value of items by comparing them to the cost of an American Girl doll. A $200 charge is TWO American Girl dolls! Fifty dollars spent at the store is half a doll…perhaps the schools should be catching on to this "new" math.

  23. Either way, it's hysterical…you should've answered all, "three spongebob's if you don't count commercials."

  29. You never cease to make me laugh! My kids do the same thing (and love Spongebob – which I still don't quite "get"). So much for being one of those Waldorfy no electronics homeschoolers huh? But isn't it good to know you have partners in crime?….Terrie
