Fashion mamas? I’m on my knees

I don’t spend a lot of money on clothes. 99% of what I own comes from Old Navy, Target, Kohls and Payless. I don’t think I’m “cheap”, I just have a hard time spending loads of cash on any single item of clothing, my wedding dress included.

There is a good reason for this. I am a klutz. I spill, stain, rip and stretch everything I own.

I was reminded of this, painfully, last night.

A year ago, I went beyond my comfort zone and splurged big time on a pair of worth-every-freakin’-penny jeans to wear to a “Black-Tie-and-Denim” fundraiser.

I’ve worn these jeans maybe a half-dozen times since, reserving them for special nights out instead of days sitting on the floor playing Legos.

And, oh, how I love these pants. These are the kind of jeans that make you understand why people pay so much for good denim. They shave off 10 pounds instantly, never pinch around the waist and are so soft, I’m surprised I haven’t worn a hole in the thighs from rubbing my hands up and down them.

But, minutes after stepping out of the car last night for date night with my husband, I did this:

Photobucket

I didn’t cry. I know they are jeans, not my wedding ring or even anything sentimental. But, I did wimper. A bit. And, then I went to the bar and drank a lot.

My husband, trying to cheer me up, announced I should put a big patch on the rip and “own it“! I am thinking maybe red embroidery thread to close it up. If I were 20 years younger, I’d rip more holes in them, bleach a few patches and call it a day, but I’m not 22 anymore.

So, c’mon fashionistas, help this poor mama salvage her favorite jeans. Otherwise, I’ll be afraid to ever spend over $25 on a pair of jeans again.

I've got no advice, but I will commiserate. I love spandex in my denim, but I sure don't like the short life span for jeans these days.

  3. Oh, I would totally patch it. Screw what people think–choose some insane embroidered patch from the sewing store and "own that tear!"

For the 1st two years of Benjamin's life I wore torn jeans to Storytime at the library–oh, the stares! The other mamas looked at me as if I showed up in pasties.

Now, I wear whatever, whenever. My jeans are ten years old and I couldn't care less. 🙂

    Rock the tear, sistah!

A really good tailor may be able to fix that with an inside patch, it kind of depends on where that tear is located. It looks clean so it may lay nicely with a patch in the inside part. It's worth taking it in to evaluate (and good luck, I'm the same kind of shopper)

  7. I am with you, if its more than 19.99 I have to think about it very seriously 😉

Sorry you ripped your jeans. But I think you can totally pull of a pair of ripped in the kneee jeans…

Hey, you're talking to the wrong person. I wear jeans with holes in the just about 24/7. Do you mean to tell me it's not hot anymore?

    Great.

I am QUEEN of the holy-knee jeans, so no judgment on that trend at all! My problem is that these jeans do not look like the hole is supposed to be there AT ALL. They look brand-new, all dark wash, with a random slit across the knee. It's not that cool broken-in look I covet in my comfy jeans. I seriously have 3-4 pairs with holes that I wear all the time; I just am really bummed to add these to that pile.

I think it's the style now. Or at least I hope so, since I have the same problem you do.

If only food on your shirt, would go into fashion.

  15. Hi
My sympathies. There is a product at your local fabric store that allows you to do an iron-on patch from the back side. It works fairly well and is easy to do if you are not in a total rush. If you rush… just don't, okay? At least you can wear them to more semi-formal denim events. I did this with a brand new pair of slacks, too expensive, caught them on a nail in a parking garage. There was ONE nail sticking out and I rubbed against it.

  17. I'd go with the suggestion to take it to a professional to see if they can patch it up. Even if you just have a big scar, at least you can still wear them. No one will notice if you keep moving. Just make sure when the paparazzi jumps out, you pose with your knock-off Payless bag in front of your knee!

  21. I have no advice, but really need to know HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?

Did you accidentally slash your jeans with a machete?

  23. My jeans? The favorite ones all have rips and holes, all of the worn-in making. Be proud. Be hole-y.
