The good ol’ days may have sucked

Last week, we went on a field trip a one-room schoolhouse that was opened in the mid-1800’s.

The kids had loads of fun dressing up, pretending to attend school and even playing games like “hit the hoop with a stick”.

As bucolic as it all looks, I think they got the gist of what life really was like: Getting up at 5am to help with chores, walking 2 miles to school, getting brought out to the “woodshed” by the superintendent if the teacher was mad at you.

Oh, and the privvy:

It’s darrrrrk in there. . .

But, if they have any doubts about what life was like just over a hundred years ago, they just need to look at this class photo:

Phew. I think this was before Smile and say cheese! was invented.

One of these days I'm going to write about what it was like growing up without running water or electricity. Just so that I make sure I remember all of it when my daughter is complaining about having to share a bathroom, or how I won't let her play video games more.

  3. OMG–'tis the season. Did you see my post about our visit to the Hans Herr House (in Lancaster, PA).

Did you learn why those funny little ruffled white hats were actually worn–to keep one's lice to one's self. Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

Looks like you had a good time–now, let's all go use our indoor plumbing.

I totally rocked at that stick and hoop at the Springfield museum. I ROCKED IT. I may have missed my window for an athletic expertise…

  9. Adorable. I remember getting dressed up like them during our third-grade class trip to Storrowton Village– complete with the white caps. After the lice comment, I'm itching all over.
