What I got for Christmas (and Valentine’s Day, and my birthday, etc)

It’s been a few weeks since the last contractors packed up and vacated my kitchen, and I can now finally find things (usually) on the first pull of the cabinet or drawer. We were back “under construction” after Christmas as my husband readied the walls to paint and now the only thing to do is pick a paint color for the walls, take a deep breath, and go for it.

I’ve been asked to show some photos of the renovation (Deb), so here is what things looked like just before Christmas. Please note that the colors are a little wonky due to my over-zealous camera flash.

Photobucket

view as you enter room; far wall will have color on it, someday

Photobucket

standing on other side of island looking at refrigerator (with our now-devoured-by-squirrels gingerbread house at bottom of frame)

Photobucket

how do you like my big balls? I almost passed out when I saw them. . .I didn’t know they’d be SO BIG, but I really, really, really love them now

Photobucket

hard to tell, but there is a textured tile on the wall above the stove; love the range hood to pieces even though I’ve whacked my head on it three times already

Photobucket

Soapstone Spyder countertops which look darker when the flash isn’t washing it out; I tell my countertops I love them every morning in the hopes that they won’t scratch or chip

Photobucket

a better look at the countertops; putting the stone on the windowsill was important since the wood sill had been so water damaged; the undermount sink is my favorite invention since Velcro

If anyone besides Deb is still reading, I’m thinking of doing a steel gray/blueish color on the walls. I think the white (primer) is too stark, and I’m not jazzed by any other color I’ve seen in the four gazillion home books and websites I’ve viewed.

I also would like to put a neutral but dirt-concealing throw rug at my feet in front to the stove and maybe the sink.

I don’t think I’ll do curtains or shade—we have no neighbors back there and I wear clothes when I cook, so no need to cover the windows.

Any thoughts or suggestions for other things I can do? It looks a little stark in these photos but, trust me, it looks really lived in already.

Lovely! I bet it is wonderful to be in there …

  3. I loooove the soapstone! The whole thing is so modern and gorgeous and I think a a slate blue would be perfect with it.

  4. Wow it's beautiful! It is so very different from what you had before. I love it!

  5. I love your big balls. And the counters made me swoon. Did you get your stools yet? (Asked by a person who still hasn't settled on a design in oh, TEN YEARS.)

Don't do window coverings. Your windows and view are too gorgeous.

As for the gray/blue color, I'm frantically rummaging through my desk to find that swatch I recommended. Ack!

I think the big balls are my favorite part of the reno, second only to the counters and, OMG, that range hood!

  7. The island material has me positively SWOONING! I LOVE that! And the soapstone – gorgeous.

I love gray/blue and have it in two rooms of my house. First is Sherwin Williams Filmy Green (which is not green at all), but my favorite color is Sea Salt, which I have in our family room.

The color does not look right at all on my monitor – it is much prettier than that.

Asking people to comment on your balls is a bit of a come-on, but sure, your balls are gorgeous.

    (*snork* I said balls!)

I covet your stove! (Oh, and I think grey on walls looks fabulous. It can look sleek, yet cozy.)

Wow! That is a beautiful kitchen. I love the island and love the range hood. Have fun in there!

  10. Issas Crazy World says

Oh it's absolutely beautiful. I think a light blue or something would be stunning.

  11. Looks beautiful. A grayish blue "wet cement" color would look lovely.

  12. I always knew you had big balls, they've just been hidden all these years (hee, hee). I have no suggestions, but I Love, Love, Love the kitchen renovations! Great job. I swoon for your stove (is that weird?).

Vintage Gray, Eddie Bauer is the color of our bathroom – I may have mentioned it the day we were there touching your balls in person – it is very much a blue gray, not a purple or green gray. Cuz ya know one gray doesn't look like the other! Lowes carries it.

Cheers! Thanks again for letting us descend on your new kitchen. It was gorgeous.

  14. I love your big balls! (and the rest of the gorgeous kitchen too!)

  15. I love your big balls.

    Seriously. Nice balls.
