Gray Days

I’ve been coloring my hair for at least 20 years, probably more.

There are no tattoos or piercings on this body, but I’ve regularly changed the color of my hair, sometimes long enough to think of myself as a “blond” or a “redhead”, but nothing sticks forever. I have proof here in this series of posts (finale here!) that show my crazy hair transformations.

But lately, I’ve been itching to see what my hair color really is, and with my hair now all of two inches in length, it hasn’t taken me too long to get my natural hair color to take over, like weeds in an abandoned lawn.

Trouble is, these weeds aren’t quite the same anymore.

At today’s hair cut, my hairdresser said, as kindly as possible, “I think you wear blond well.”

I made note of this, with a slight twinge since I am most definitely NOT blond right now.

And then this: “Plus, the blond would cover all the gray you have.”

Wha, wha, what?!?!?

Oh, yes, while I’ve been happily keeping my hair chemical-free, they’ve been going gray in large patches throughout my very-short hair.

So, how soon do you think I’ll be blond again? Or should I just embrace (cough) my advancing age (cough) and be happy (and chemical free)?

  1. Oh, go with what makes you happy. But the reddish color was HOT! 🙂

Aw, c'mon. You're not going to post a photo of your current haircut? Tease.

One reason I stopped dying was that watching my hair go grey would be less stressful than realizing after the fact that I'd gone 100% grey. Yes, I'm a big ol' chicken.

I am just about completely grey (white!). But my youthful colour was dark. An amazing amount of upkeep. Working up the courage to go au naturel

  4. I started to let my hair grow out and was SHOCKED how gray I was. I caved and let our lovely hairdresser color it. I'm glad I did.

You look great as a redhead and brunette, but I always thought you wore blonde hair very well. Have fun with it!

I made the choice when I was in my early 20's and started going gray to just let it go. The thought of eventually having to go white, or cover a skunk stripe was too much for me. However, my hair is very dark, and doesn't do highlights or the light colors that hide is well. So, I've got streaks of gray, but no skunk strip now.
Do what you want, but I've always loved to see women who are brave enough to go with their natural color. Especially ones like you that seem so youthful.

I'm a do-as-you-like kind of person myself. If you feel comfortable with a color, go for it. But with that said, going gray does sound interesting. If anyone is going to rock it, you are!

Its your hair… do what makes you happy… and you KNOW I am not a super frilly girly girl, and my hair is not often out of a pony tail, BUT as soon as the grays start taking over I'll be coloring them for sure. Maybe then I'll be more inclined to do my hair regularly. Lucky for me the grays haven't started the take over, but I swear the stuff is falling out. Sooo, I'd take grays over femail baldness!

  8. I remember when my aunt when blond because of the gray. She was amazed and said, "This is why so many people go blond!" Like she had discovered a new planet or something.

Definitely go with the color that makes you happy.

  9. I will be needing a current pic before I can weigh in on this issue.

Lately, a lot of people who I THOUGHT were my friends have been asking me questions like, "So, are you going to color your hair?"

I am resisting because I can't take the hassle – but if I start getting mistaken for the Grandma and not the Mama, you can bet I'll make an emergency appt at the hairdressers.

I loved your whitish blonde with the totally cool sunglasses. And loved the wedding photo red. So you can rock it no matter WHAT! I have a feeling you have attitude to carry it all off (newish reader here). i personally love changing my hair color from red to blonde, and back again, too!

  11. Gosh, shows how observant I am. I haven't even noticed! I have plenty of grays and am going to *try* to go natural. My mom highly recommmends it – she reminds me that once you start, it's hard to stop – too shocking.
